Lizette Salas Shoots 68 For First-Round WAPL Lead Devens, Mass. – Lizette Salas, 19, of Azusa, Calif., fired a 4-under-par 68 to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of stroke-play qualifying at the 2009 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship at the 6,267-yard, par-72 Red Tail Golf Club. Alice Kim, 19, of Walnut, Calif., Sara-Maude Juneau, 21, of Canada, Cydney Clanton, 19, of Concord, N.C., and Kristen Hill, 19, of Weston, Fla., are one stroke behind at 69.
Good scoring was possible despite bad weather on a day of steady drizzle with temperatures in the low 60s and winds gusting to 25 mph. “In California, we hardly ever get rain,” said Salas, a junior at the University of Southern California. “When I saw the weather this morning, I knew I would just have to prepare myself mentally.” Added Juneau: “I was expecting way worse. I tried to keep my hands dry and be more patient.” Hill was so focused on her game that she was oblivious to the conditions. “I actually didn’t even notice the bad weather, I was playing so well,” said Hill, a sophomore at the University of Akron. Salas kick-started her back nine when she made three consecutive birdies starting at the 11th hole. Her first birdie came on a rambling 40-foot putt. She then made a 5-footer on No. 12 and a 3-footer on the 13th to go to three under par. She capped her round by holing a 3-foot birdie putt at 16. “I was a little iffy on how I was going to play because I’ve been out for more than a week with a lower back sprain, so I’m sort of limping through,” said Salas, who tied for medalist honors at the 2008 WAPL. “But I’ve got a new putter that really suits me and I really like this golf course.” Kim started on the back nine, where she made birdies on four of her last six holes. Hitting short irons into the greens, she made birdie putts ranging from 4 to 40 feet to shoot 4-under-par 32. When she birdied the fourth and sixth holes she was six under par and on a record pace, but a one-stroke penalty for an unplayable lie resulted in a triple-bogey 7 on the eighth hole. Kim, who will be a junior at the University of California-Davis, said her game has shown marked improvement since she qualified last month for the 2009 U.S. Women’s Open. “I knew that I’d have to practice after I qualified for the Women’s Open and I’ve worked hard on my short game,” Kim said. “I think it paid off.” Juneau, a junior at the University of Louisville, enjoyed two good breaks in her run of five birdies. She drove into trees lining the fourth fairway but her ball bounced into light rough and she eventually holed a 15-foot birdie putt. At the 15th hole, she holed a chip out of a divot for a birdie. Hill, playing in the afternoon wave, finished in near darkness. She was one under par after making a double-bogey 7 at the fourth hole, but recovered quickly a hole later with a birdie. Four of her birdie putts were in the 4- to 8-foot range, however, she converted a 20-footer at No. 11 for a birdie. She later chipped in from 25 feet for a birdie at the 16th hole. Clanton holed four birdie putts ranging from 2 to 15 feet. The Auburn University junior, who qualified for the 2008 U.S. Women’s Open, made only one bogey in her 3-under-par round. Local favorite Brittany Altomare, 18, of Shrewsbury, Mass., was just three strokes behind the leader with a 71. Altomare, who tied for second in the 2009 Women’s Eastern Amateur Championship and has qualified for next month’s U.S. Women’s Open at Saucon Valley Country Club, had five birdies against four bogeys in her 1-under-par round. After Tuesday’s second stroke-play qualifying round, the low 64 scorers will advance to match play beginning on Wednesday. A 36-hole final is slated for Saturday. The U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links, for public course players, is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
