Amy Fruhwirth

Amy Fruhwirth, 23, of Phoenix, Ariz., joined Pearl Sinn as the only players to win Women's Amateur and Women's Amateur Public Links titles when she defeated Sara Evens, 3 and 1, to capture the 1992 WAPL AT Haggin Oaks Golf Course, in Sacramento, Calif. Fruhwirth also won the 1991 U.S. Women's Amateur Championship.

The medallist was Heather Hughes, of Palo Alto, Calif., who recorded scores of 66-75-141, but she was eliminated in the first round by Megan Hamilton, of Elk Grove, Calif., at the second extra hole. Hamilton was eventually beaten by Evens, who also handled Nicole Jeray, of Berwyn, Ill., to advance to the final. Most of the attention in the match play draw was centered around a potential third round duel between Fruhwirth and defending champion Tracy Hanson, but that match-up never materialized as Hanson lost to Carrie Leary, of Santa Clarita, Calif., in the opening round. Fruhwirth, meanwhile, marched to the final with relative ease. She won her first two matches, 4 and 3, then 7 and 6, before defeating Carrie Leary, of Santa Clarita, Calif., and Elizabeth Bowman, of Bonita, Calif., to earn a berth in the final.

Both finalists birdied the opening hole of the match, played the first nine in even-par 35, and made the turn all square. Birdies by Fruhwirth on the 11th, 15th and 17th hole decided the outcome before a crowd of more than 2,000.
