Tracy Hanson

Tracy Hanson, 19, of Rathdrum, Idaho, took her first lead on the 15th hole by sinking a 20-foot birdie putt and then parred the final three holes to win by 1 up over Carri Wood, of South Dennis, Mass., in the Women's Amateur Public Links Championship.

Miss Hanson, a junior at San Jose State University, made a clean sweep of medals; she was medalist, shotting a two-day total of 140, and helped her Spokane, Wash., team claim the Team Championship.

Hanson's final three holes included a dramatic save for par on the 18th. She flew the green with her second shot but executed a delicate chip to within five feet of the cup, then holed the putt.

Miss Wood, a junior at Mississippi State University, had shot 152 in qualifying, but she gained a 3-hole advantage through the first six holes by simply making pars. She remained 2 up heading to the 12th hole, where Hanson closed the gap with a par 3. Hanson then holed a 10-foot birdie putt on the 13 to pull all square heading down the stretch.

Hanson, who had advanced to the semifinals of the 1990 championship, defeated Nicole Jerey, of Berwyn, Ill., 8 and 7, to reach the 1991 final. Wood battled with Barbara Casper, of Fond du Lac, Wis., in her semifinal match before prevailing by 1 up.
