Cindy Schreyer

Cindy Schreyer, 22, of Peachtree City, Georgia, defeated Victoria Goetze of Hull, Geogia, 3 and 2, at SentryWorld Golf Course in Stevens Point, WisconsinDanielle Ammaccapane, the 1985 champion, shot a record 142 to earn the qualifying medal; she lost in the quarterfinal round to Catherine Burton, 1 up.

In the final, Schreyer won the first four holes, as well as the seventh, threatening to make this final the most lop-sided in the championship's history. Goetze, 13 and bidding to become the youngest USGA champion ever, won the ninth and the 10th to pull to within three. Schreyer won the 11th and 12th, but Goetze came back again, winning the 13th and 14th. The two golfers halved the 15th and 16th to give Schreyer the victory.

The 10th WAPL Team Championship was won by Phoenix, its record fourth team title. The team of Lee Ann Hammack, Kay Cornelius and Carol Berger combined for a 309 total, one stroke ahead of the Cleveland team and six better than Los Angeles. The USGA accepted a record 1,085 entries for the championship.
