Ya-Ni Tseng Defeats Wie For WAPL Title
Williamsburg, Va. – Ya-Ni Tseng of Chinese Taipei defeated defending champion Michelle Wie of Honolulu, Hawaii, 1 up, in the 36-hole championship match of the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship at Golden Horseshoe Golf Club's Green Course on Sunday. The 15-year-old Tseng becomes the second-youngest winner of this championship. Wie was 13 when she defeated Virada Nirapathpongporn, 1 up, last year at Ocean Hammock Golf Club. Tseng also becomes the second player from Chinese Taipei to win the title. Candie Kung, who now plays on the LPGA Tour, captured the 2001 championship at Kemper Lakes outside of Chicago. Tseng and Wie were all square through 35 holes, but Tseng ended the match on the final hole of regulation with a birdie at the par five. Wie was trying to become the first player since Pearl Sinn in 1988 and '89 to win back-to-back Women's Amateur Public Links titles. Wie defeated Angela Park, 15, of Torrance, Calif., 2 and 1, in the semifinals. Tseng defeated Korean-born In-Bee Park, 15, of Eustis, Fla., 1 up. Wie's third-round match against Jane Park, 17, of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., was a battle between Curtis Cup roommates. Wie birdied four of the last six holes to win, 2 and 1.
