Nirapathpongporn Leads Rain-Delayed Qualifying

Palm Coast, Fla. – Virada Nirapathpongporn, 21, of Bangkok, Thailand, took the lead for medalist honors course in the United States Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship with a 36-hole total of 141, on the par-72, 6068-yard course at Ocean Hammock Golf Club.

Nirapathpongporn added a 69 to her opening 72 but was denied medalist honors outright when 30 players remained on the course when play was called because of darkness.

She edged Aimee Cho, 19, of Orlando, Fla., who fired 74-68—142. Michelle Wie, 13, of Honolulu, Hawaii, was at 73-71—144. Defending champion Annie Thurman, 20, of Highland, Utah, finished at 73-72—145 and U.S. Women’s Amateur Champion Becky Lucidi, 22, of Poway, Calif., was at 72-74—146.

A weather delay of more than two hours in mid-afternoon kept the 144-player field from finishing. Play will resume Thursday morning, followed by the first round of match play in this national championship, one of 13 conducted by the United States Golf Association.

“It was a little bit softer when I came back (after the delay),” said Nirapathpongporn, the 2002 NCAA Division I women's national champion. She will be a senior at Duke University this fall. “The course really didn’t play much different. I just made more putts today and when I missed a green, I was able to get it up and down.”

The much-heralded Wie enjoyed a gallery of nearly 200 people before the thunderstorms. When play resumed the number of spectators had shrunk to 10.

“It was kind of strange,” said Wie. “All of the people were noisy and alive and after the rain everything seemed so dead.”

Wie’s four-birdie round suffered from four penalty strokes in the course of play.

Thurman, who will be a junior at Oklahoma State this fall, said she’s optimistic she can successfully defend the title she won in 2002 when match play begins. “I’m confident going in,” she said. “You’ve got to be hot and you’ve got to make birdies out there, but I like my chances.”

Cho was on the 11th fairway when notified of the weather delay.

“The wind was blowing really hard, about a three-club wind,” said Cho. “As soon as the official called it I marked my ball because I didn’t want to hit with that much wind. When play resumed, there was no wind.”

When the second round of qualifying is completed Thursday morning, the low 64 players will advance to match play. The championship will be decided with a 36-hole final on Sunday.
