Jessica Reese Captures Medalist Honors in U.S. Women's Amateur Public LinksChampionship

Sunriver, Oregon – Jessica Reese, 21, of Santa Rosa, Calif., fired a record-tying second round of 66 to win medalist honors in the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship at the 6,189-yard par 71 Meadows Course of the Sunriver Resort.
Reese’s 76-66—142, even par, edged past Gabby Wedding, 18, of Wilmington, Ohio, who shot 74-69—143, by one stroke. When Wedding withdrew immediately after her round when she learned of a death in her family, Hana Kim, 19, finished second in the stroke-play qualifying with 72-72—144.

Reese attributed her ten-stroke turn around to warmer, less windy weather than Tuesday’s opening round and to her putting. She made six birdies on putts ranging from two feet to 30 feet to a lone bogey that came on the second hole with a single three-putt green.

“I wasn’t thinking about my round at all,” said Reese. “I was just playing golf. My putting was good. It was my caddie, Clint Rolyance, of Santa Rosa, a college player and friend. He was reading my putts.”

Reese’s round today of 66 tied the record low 18-hole stroke play round in the Women’s Amateur Public Links. The number has been shot twice, by Heather Hughes in 1992 and by Jill McGill in 1994. Hughes and Reese shot 66 on par 71 courses. McGill’s 66, six under par on a par-72 course, is the record for most under par.

Erica Blasberg, of Corona, Calif., and Kimberly Rowton, of San Antonio, Texas, were tied for third low qualifiers with scores of 145, three over par.
This was Reese’s best showing in a national championship. She reached the semifinals of the 1998 U.S. Girls’ Junior. While she played in the Girls’ Junior five times, and twice in the U.S. Women’s Amateur, this is her first appearance in the championship reserved for public course players.

“I couldn’t play until this year because I was a member of a private club,” she said. “I dropped my membership last year because I didn’t want to pay the monthly dues while I was away at the University of Texas.”

The two youngest players in the field, Michelle Wie, of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Mina Harigae, of Monterey, Calif., both 12 years old, easily qualified. Wie shot 79-71—150 and Harigae finished with 75-76—151, making the cut by six strokes.

Harigae was also part of the winning Sacramento, Calif., team which won the team title by two strokes over the team from Chicago, Ill. In the annual competition in which the best two scores count toward the daily team score, Harigae, Reese and Casey Gee combined for a 72-hole total of 293. Chicago had 295.

The cut came at 157, 15 over par, with nine players vying for four spots to be among the 64 advancing to match play. Matches begin Thursday with the first and second round. Reese plays Sunny Oh, Torrance, Calif., in the first round after Oh became one of the qualifiers in a two-hole playoff.

The championship, one of 13 conducted by the United States Golf Association, ten of which are strictly for amateurs, winds up with a 36-hole final on Sunday.
