Lindsey Wright Leads Qualifiers in U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links ChampionshipSunriver, Oregon - Cold, gusty winds didn’t deter Lindsey Wright, 22, of Malibu, Calif., who shot 69 to lead in the opening qualifying round of the United States Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship. Wright faced similar, though warmer, conditions Saturday when she was runner-up in the time-honored British Ladies Open Amateur Championship in Llanlli, Wales.
Wright’s 2-under-par score Tuesday led qualifiers in the Women’s Amateur Public Links over the 6,189-yard Meadows Course at Sunriver Resort.
Wright made the transition to an American championship, but none too easily. After a 22-hour trip, she arrived at Sunriver Sunday night and played only a few practice holes Monday.
“I should have played a practice round, but didn’t,” said Wright. “I was just too jet-lagged. I played five holes, then came back to walk the rest of the course and had a look.
“I feel if I’ve done three eight-hour shifts working,” said Wright, who will be a senior at Pepperdine University in September. She takes tickets at the box office of the 450-seat Smothers Theater at Pepperdine.
Undaunted by winds that gusted to 25 mph and temperatures in the high 50s, Wright was 1-under par on those first five holes. Playing the remaining 13 holes in 1 under she eased past Terra Petsinger,19, of Arvida, N.D., who fired an even-par 71.
Petsinger, who will be a sophomore at the University of Minnesota, said she is accustomed to the brisk conditions.
“I didn’t think it was too bad today,” said Petsinger. “We get a lot of wind and cold weather.”
Petsinger’s score bettered her previous competitive low by three strokes, a round she shot in a junior tournament in Oregon. She also recorded her best collegiate finish in the state.
“I just like Oregon,” she said.
Playing in windy conditions at the British championship last week gave Wright a boost. “I had more of an advantage (today) than anyone else in the field,” she said. “In Wales, it took two or three days to get used to the wind. Mind you, it was colder here.”
Wright, comparing the Meadows course with Ashburnham Golf Club, in Wales, said the greens at Sunriver were more receptive to sharp iron play.
“Last week I had to hit the ball 30 yards short of the flag because the greens were so firm,” she said. “Sunriver is in exceptional condition. It reminds me of last week’s U.S. Open course because the rough is so tough and you have to hit the fairways off the tee.”
Wright was second low individual in this year’s NCAA championship. She is playing in only her second United States Golf Association championship, which conducts 13 national championships of which ten are strictly for amateurs. She made it to the third round of the 2001 U.S. Women’s Amateur to become exempt for the Women’s Amateur Public Links.
After Wednesday’s second 18-hole qualifying round, the field of 144 players will be cut to the low 64 for match play. First round matches begin Thursday. A 36-hole final will decide the championship on Sunday.
