Annie Thurman Wins 26th United States Women's Amateur Public Links Championship

Sunriver, Ore. – Annie Thurman, 19, of Highland, Utah, defeated Hwanhee Lee, 19, of Cerritos, Calif., 6 and 5, to win the 2002 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship at the 6,189-yard, par 71 Meadows Course of the Sunriver Resort Sunday.

Notebook: Competitor From Iceland Makes History

Sunriver, Ore. — Olof Maria Jonsdottir made history this week and it wasn’t for any of the golf shots she produced at the 2002 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship. When Jonsdottir, who recently graduated from the University of Arkansas-Little Rock, hit her first tee shot on Tuesday morning, she officially became the first golfer from Iceland to ever compete in a USGA championship.  


Harigae, 12, Excels In A Field Where Average Age Is 23.2 Years

Sunriver, Ore. -- “I played terrible,” said Mina Harigae. The seventh-grader at Monterey, California’s Walter Cotton Middle School had just shot 76. With an eagle. In a national championship. On a 6,189-yard course.  


With Little Fear, 12-Year-Old Wie Sets Lofty Goals

Sunriver, Ore. – Michelle Wie, like any 12 year old, has a couple of fears. “I can’t surf, I’m too scared,” said the Honolulu youngster, “and, I’m afraid of heights.” That’s about all that frightens her.

PAR AND YARDAGE – The Championship will be conducted over the Meadows Course, which will play at 6,189 yards and a par of 35-36—71. For the championship, Stimpmeter reading of the greens is 10 to 10 ½ inches.  Fairways are mowed at .450 to .475 inches.  The Primary Rough will be 2½ - 3 inches, and intermediate rough is to be mowed to a height of 1 ¼ inch.

ARCHITECT – The Meadows Course was originally designed by Fred Federspiel in 1969-70.  It was completely redesigned by John Fought in 1999.

PAIRINGS AND STARTING TIMES – Pairings and starting times will be distributed to the media the week of June 18th.  They will also be posted on the USGA Internet site at www.usga.org.
